Lao Tzu

Sumit encountered the teachings of Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, while touring Meghalaya. Lao Tzu’s fundamental teaching is the concept of the Tao, often translated as ‘The Way’. It refers to the natural, underlying force that flows through all life, guiding it toward harmony.

Lao Tzu advocated for minimal interference with nature, emphasizing that when we act in accordance with nature, unnecessary struggle is avoided. Sumit believes that minimal design and interference with nature reveal true beauty—acting in harmony with the flow of the world.

Sumit was deeply influenced by Lao Tzu’s teachings on balance. Balance is essential for a peaceful life, as everything in life has both light and dark, hard and soft. These opposites work together to create a balanced universe. Yin and Yang represent the balance of complementary forces in the universe, where opposites like light and dark, masculinity and femininity, or activity and passivity coexist and depend on each other. Constantly in flux, they maintain harmony, teaching us that balance—not extremes—is key to growth and well-being.

This understanding helps us respect the coexistence of opposing forces in everything. Lao Tzu often compared the Tao to water—soft, fluid, and adaptable—suggesting that we should approach life like water: flexible and adaptable, rather than rigidly forcing our will.
