Jadav Payeng – The forest man of India

1963 (age 61 years)

In 1979, a 16-year-old Payeng witnessed a large number of snakes that had died due to extreme heat after being washed onto a treeless sandbar by the floods. That moment inspired him to plant around 20 bamboo saplings on the sandbar. He not only nurtured these plants but also continued to plant more trees on his own, striving to transform the barren area into a thriving forest.

“If animals cannot survive, what will happen to humans?” he thought. That question became the seed for a mission that would consume the next four decades of his life.

Jadav didn’t have money, resources, or any formal education in environmental science. What he had was determination. He began by planting bamboo saplings, which grew quickly and stabilized the soil. Day after day, he carried young plants to the barren sandbars, planting them with his own hands. He nurtured the saplings like his children, watering them with buckets drawn from the river. Over time, other tree species like neem, tamarind, and ficus joined the growing forest.

What began as a solitary mission caught the attention of wildlife. Birds returned first, followed by deer, elephants, and even tigers. By the 1990s, the Molai forest—named after Jadav’s nickname—had grown to cover over 1,300 acres. It is now home to countless species of flora and fauna, acting as a natural barrier against erosion and a sanctuary for endangered animals.

Jadav remains humble about his work, even as accolades pour in from environmentalists worldwide. He often says, “If one person can bring life to a barren place, imagine what a hundred people can do.” His story is a testament to how a single person, armed with nothing but willpower, can transform the world.
